A small group of members visited the Settlement in Fairfield for a guided tour as part of Heritage weekend and what an interesting afternoon we had, in spite of the rain.
Tucked away just off the busy Fairfield Road, Droylesdon, this is a delightful, unexpected place stepping back in time to the early settlers when the land was bought by Moravian refugees from Czech and Bohemia in the late 1700s; they were persecuted for their religious beliefs. These people were early Protestants rebelling against Rome years before Martin Luther.
Today they preserve their historic Georgian architecture and cobbled streets, and their church (the school for girls closed in 2011) while remaining a vibrant and strong community in 21st century, a very worthwhile visit.
